LOVE LETER TO A COWBOY

Ivi Hua

where i confess: i understand nothing at all.
these wildlands, struck by drought, bear no
truth. acclimation doesn’t come easily.
yesterday, i watched you from the window,

saw the horse kicking up dirt. you brazen &
free. in your wake, those cattle trailed, glass-
eyed & sun-shot. god. i know how it is. my
america brings me to tears. dust collects in the
kitchen sink. out on the ranch, you are king of
the west, galloping towards a desert sunset. still
sweet & sharp as a knife. oh, you wild thing. i
won't try to make you learn. if i were less of
myself, i too would join the herd.
