where i confess: i understand nothing at all. these wildlands, struck by drought, bear no truth. acclimation doesn’t come easily. yesterday, i watched you from the window, saw the horse kicking up dirt. you brazen & free. in your wake, those cattle trailed, glass- eyed & sun-shot. god. i know how it is. my america brings me to tears. dust collects in the kitchen sink. out on the ranch, you are king of the west, galloping towards a desert sunset. still sweet & sharp as a knife. oh, you wild thing. i won't try to make you learn. if i were less of myself, i too would join the herd.
